ChatGPT Search vs Google Search: What Changes for Business Visibility?

Understand how ChatGPT Search and Google Search differ, which SEO fundamentals still matter, and how to measure business visibility in AI answers.

A buyer needs a new CRM implementation partner. They might type a short phrase into Google, scan search results, visit a few websites and compare suppliers. Or they might ask ChatGPT to suggest relevant partners, explain differences and provide sources for a shortlist.

These are different discovery experiences. But they do not justify abandoning the work that makes a business credible and findable in the first place.

The original NBT article compared SearchGPT, an early prototype, with Google. In 2026 the useful question is broader and more practical: how should businesses make their expertise accessible and trustworthy across conventional search and AI-assisted answers?

    1. What the two experiences are trying to solve

Google Search helps people discover information through a results interface that can include conventional links and AI-powered features. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode can generate responses and show links for follow-up research.

ChatGPT Search can answer questions conversationally and present sources that people can inspect. Users may continue asking clarifying questions instead of beginning a new search from scratch.

Neither system delivers the same response for every person or every query. Interfaces, model behaviour and source selection can change, and a single example is not a reliable ranking study.

    2. Traditional results and AI answers are not mutually exclusive

It is tempting to present this as a replacement story: blue links disappear and AI answers take over. That simplifies a more complicated reality.

For many searches, users still need websites, documentation, tools, local results, prices, videos or direct access to a company. AI-generated explanations can be a step in that journey rather than the end of it.

Google's documentation on AI features explicitly says established SEO fundamentals remain relevant to AI Overviews and AI Mode. It also says there are no additional technical requirements or special optimisations necessary to appear in those features.

The practical conclusion is not that AI search changes nothing. It is that content accessibility, subject expertise and clear site architecture still matter while marketers evaluate new patterns of discovery.

    3. How crawling and visibility differ

For Google AI features, pages generally need to be indexed and eligible to appear in regular Search with a snippet. Crawlability, internal linking, visible textual content and accurate structured data remain important fundamentals.

OpenAI distinguishes several automated agents with different purposes. Its crawler documentation identifies OAI-SearchBot as the agent for surfacing sites in ChatGPT search experiences, whereas GPTBot concerns content that may be used for model training. ChatGPT-User is associated with user-initiated page visits.

A business should check its robots.txt and server responses rather than assuming that blocking or allowing one bot governs every AI product. Permissions can be configured differently for search and training, and correct access does not guarantee a citation or inclusion.

    4. The real content challenge is evidence and specificity

A generic article asserting that a company is innovative gives neither a search engine nor a buyer much to work with. Detailed service descriptions, useful methodologies, technical specifications, original observations and clear answers to customer questions are more valuable assets.

For a consultancy, that could mean explaining exactly which problems it diagnoses, which inputs a client needs to provide, how implementation works and which outcomes it measures. For a software company, it could mean accurate product documentation, limitations, comparisons and examples.

Artificially inserting question-and-answer phrases or producing hundreds of thin pages is not a substitute for expertise. Search systems and readers alike need information that resolves a real task.

    5. Technical foundations worth checking first

A practical visibility review starts with the pages themselves. Can a crawler fetch them? Is the article content available in the initial HTML rather than only after extensive client-side execution? Are titles, canonicals and navigation accurate? Are important pages discoverable through links and a sensible sitemap?

Structured data can help describe content where appropriate, but it must match what the reader sees. Google does not require special AI-only schema or an AI text file for AI Overview eligibility, according to its official guidance.

A site may choose to publish an llms.txt file for other reasons, but should not claim that this file by itself makes Google AI features index or cite its content.

    6. Measuring search visibility without inventing attribution

Traditional search measurement remains important: search impressions, clicks, page-level rankings where available, engaged sessions, qualified enquiries and conversions.

Google says AI Overview and AI Mode traffic is included within its Search Console performance reporting, not necessarily isolated in a universally available standalone AI-traffic report. ChatGPT referrals may appear in analytics where attribution survives, but a generated answer that mentions a brand without a click is harder to measure.

A single screenshot showing a company in an AI answer is a useful observation, not proof of stable visibility. A better approach is to maintain a repeatable set of relevant buyer questions, record whether answers cite the business, inspect source quality and compare findings over time. Treat this as directional research, not a definitive market-share benchmark.

END## 8. How this connects to NBT's growth work

A business does not need separate, competing content strategies for every search interface. It needs trustworthy material connected to how its customers investigate problems and choose suppliers.

NBT's guide to SEO briefs that actually rank helps turn research into useful editorial direction. The Growth Marketing Agency combines SEO, content, measurement and conversion work rather than treating traffic as the sole outcome.

For more complex systems, NBT's AI & GTM Engineering perspective connects information architecture and operational workflows with commercial needs. Technical implementation should serve an actual buyer journey, not a promise of guaranteed AI citations.

    9. What to do next

Choose three to five high-intent customer questions. Check whether your most relevant page answers each well. Test whether crawlers can retrieve the real content, improve weak explanations and verify internal links. Then monitor search performance and qualified business outcomes while observing AI answers cautiously.

AI changes how information is assembled and experienced. It does not remove the need to publish something genuinely worth finding.
